We all know how important good dental hygiene is. However, no matter how much we try to convince our kids, sometimes, their playful selves do not see how essential it is to maintain proper dental care. They do not see brushing or flossing as fun activities that will make them comply and do oral care because they want to, and not because you forced them to. Here are some ways to make dental care fun for the kids.
1) Brush and Floss Together
As the old saying goes, lead by example! Kids mimic what their parents do so brushing and flossing with them will create the impression that it is an important activity. This is also a good opportunity for parents to show their children the proper way of brushing their teeth to ensure good oral hygiene.
2) Reward good oral care behavior
When your kids practice good oral hygiene, come up with a reward system that will make them more excited to brush their teeth and floss. Rewards as simple as playing with them their favorite games, taking them to the park, or giving them their favorite treats will go a long way.
3) Let Them Use A Special Toothbrush
A good way to keep your kids' interest alive is to let them use a special toothbrush that will make brushing seem like a fun activity. Choose colorful soft-bristled toothbrush or better yet, toothbrushes that is designed to look like your kids' favorite cartoon character.
4) Time your kids while brushing
The American Dental Association recommends at least 2 minutes of brushing, twice a day. Timing your kids using an alarm clock, a sand timer, or even playing their favorite music for two minutes will make sure that they will be brushing teeth long enough and it will also make brushing exciting for them.
5) Show Videos That About Dental Hygiene
Kids these days enjoy watching random videos on the internet. One good way to make them understand the importance of dental hygiene is by showing them videos that are designed for children.
6) Let them choose.
One effective way of keeping them excited in brushing their teeth is to allow them to choose on what toothbrush or what flavor of toothpaste they want to use. This will give them a sense of ownership and will make them feel like their choice is being considered. This will also give them a sense of responsibility and ensure compliance to good hygiene.
7) Talk to them.
Sometimes the simplest way is the best way. To make your kids understand the importance of good oral hygiene, one good way is to directly explain to them why it is important. Kids these days are very mature and once they understand the importance of good oral hygiene, you will be surprised with how enthusiastic they will become in brushing their teeth.
Maintaining good oral hygiene should start early. Follow the steps above and your kids will be excited in keeping their teeth clean and healthy. Want more tips? Send us a message!
