Tooth Decay is one of the most common dental conditions. In fact, cavities are the second most common disease in the United States after the common cold.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about a third of Americans have untreated dental cavities. This can destroy your teeth or can lead to more serious complications. Because of this, it is important to know the common signs of tooth cavity in order to prevent it from getting worse. Here are some of them:
1) Tooth Sensitivity
Tooth sensitivity is a common problem for many people and it is not necessarily caused by tooth decay. In order to know if your teeth sensitivity is caused by cavities, try to assess whether eating hot or cold beverage only affects a tooth. If it does, it is most likely caused by cavities. Harmless tooth sensitivity usually affects several teeth.
2) Visible Discoloration
When a cavity begins to develop, it discolors the teeth mildly. At first, this might not cause alarm but when the cavity begins to progress to a tooth decay, the discoloration becomes visible and larger.
3) Bad Breath
The same bacteria that causes cavity and tooth decay also causes bad breath. If you notice that you have bad breath even after brushing, you may have cavities.
4) Swelling or Bleeding Gums
When the cavity is near the gum line, it can affect the soft tissues surrounding it. This causes swelling or bleeding gums, especially when brushing your teeth or flossing.
5) A hole in your tooth
If you notice a hole in your tooth and its getting larger, this may be a clear indication of tooth decay. The hole may also be accompanied by pain or sensitivity in the area.
Cavities are one of the most common causes of toothache. As cavities erode the enamel of your tooth, it exposes the nerve endings which causes the pain especially when biting down.
Prevention is always better than cure. In order to prevent having cavities, make sure to always keep a good oral hygiene and go to your dentists for your regular check-up.
